Five Ways To Stay Organized When Life Seems To Be Out Of Control

Some people seem to be more naturally organized than others. My mother was the queen of organization. Her motto was always, “a place for everything and everything in its place.” If we dared walk away from a piece of paper for more than five minutes, it disappeared. She was notorious for putting everything in drawers. She just wanted them out of sight!

If being organized doesn’t come naturally for you, don’t lose hope. You can take control of your workday and your environment if you wish to. It’s just a matter of creating a system. Being organized is about behavior and how you take control of your surroundings — or don’t.

Find below some tips for getting (and staying) organized when the going gets tough.

1. Plan ahead. 

Remember the Girl Scout motto? Be prepared.

Being prepared is the key to everything. It doesn’t happen by accident, though. Being prepared requires thinking ahead and anticipating obstacles.

Back to my mom. When we were growing up, she insisted that we put our clothes, shoes, socks, the works, out the night before. She was always caught up on the laundry, so we never had to scramble for something clean. She was an extraordinary planner. She left little to chance. She tried to anticipate every contingency. All that planning kept the potential for any kind of drama at bay.

Plan as much as you can for the next day before you go to bed the night before. That includes putting out your clothes and your kids’ clothes. Put work and school bags near the door. Check your to-do list and, if possible, prepare the things you need for breakfast and lunch the night before. Meal planning may sound boring, but it will save you time, stress, and money. Even if you feel tired, you will appreciate the effort the next morning.

You can even plan for the week ahead. Keep a selection of pre-prepared meals in your freezer. Freezer cooking doesn’t have to be a chore. By cooking up meals during the weekend and freezing them, they’ll be available all week.

On Sunday evening, scan the calendar for the week ahead. Knowing in advance what the schedule is will help prepare you. You can’t control unforeseen events that may occur, of course. But you don’t want to be surprised by things that are already on your calendar.

2. Turn off extra technology.

Studies show that you lose focus and productivity if you try to multitask. If you’ve got a long list of things to do, turn off your email and set designated times when you will check it. Do the same with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Avoid TV, and give 100% of your time and attention to the project at hand. You will wind up completing the project more efficiently and faster.

Once you’ve completed everything, you can go back to technology and enjoy your time on the phone or computer without guilt.

3. Prioritize.

Don’t try to be a superhero. Instead, take a look at your to-do list and rank each item. Cross off or move to another day anything that isn’t essential. Check off anything that you’ve already completed. Delegate whatever you can. Only do the things that need to be done, and you’ll feel more in control.

If it’s not essential, ignore it.

4. De-clutter.

Clutter is easy to create. Don’t let it become a problem.

Take a few minutes each day to put things away and throw out the junk. Put the dishes in the dishwasher. Deal with the mail immediately instead of letting it pile up on the counter. Throw out things you aren’t going to use. Clean drawers and closets periodically. Toss, give away, or sell (have a yard sale) items that you haven’t used for a year or more.

Some people find a certain comfort in collecting things. There is a fine line, however, between collecting and hoarding. If you haven’t used it in a year, you don’t need it.

If you need help, get help. Use online storage tools like Dropbox and Google Drive to keep your computer desktop organized. For paperwork, you don’t want to discard, like receipts, use file folders and keep them in a filing cabinet. Hang on to things you need for your taxes. Mark and organize items in such a way that you will make it easy for yourself to find later. Organize everything for your relatives, too, in case something happens to you and you can’t deal with your own affairs.

5. Get up a little earlier.

While getting up earlier may seem pointless, it can help you get a head start on your day if you use the extra time wisely. Create a morning routine. Practice healthy habits. Exercise, meditate, eat a healthy breakfast. Take a few moments to run through the calendar for the day, so you feel more in control.

By getting up earlier, you can start your day feeling both energized and organized. By completing essential tasks, you make sure that you and your family are ready for the day ahead.

Another thing, before I go, remember to take care of your mental, physical and emotional health. Exercise regularly, eat healthy meals, and practice meditation or mindfulness. This will help you feel more able to cope when things don’t go as planned or when life seems to spiral out of control. And don’t forget to get enough sleep.

No matter how organized and well-planned you are, there will be times when life gets busy. You may start to worry that you can’t get everything done. But following these tips will help you stay in control. Happy organizing!

DIY Can Lantern

Good morning my friends! It is Saturday morning, the kids are asleep and I thought I’d share a favorite DIY with you! Can Lanterns! Have you seen them? They’re really cute and it’s fun to do, my kids loved it, too!

What You’ll Need

  • empty metal cans (soup cans or large coffee cans work best)
  • graph paper
  • permanent marker
  • tape
  • hammer
  • finish nails
  • clamp
  • drill
  • 3/32″ masonry drill bit
  • outdoor spray paint
  • wire hanger (optional)

Remove Label

Run label under hot water to loosen adhesive, then remove by gently scrubbing with a sponge or rag.

Sketch Out Design

On graph paper, mark the top, bottom, and sides of the can with a permanent marker. Remove can and create a dot design within the marked parameters. Tip: the more dots you draw, the more light will show through the finished lantern.

Tape Graph Paper to Can

Trim paper to fit the top and bottom of the can, then attach with masking tape.

Punch Pilot Holes

Attach can to a solid work surface with a sturdy clamp. Using a hammer and finish nail, stamp each drawn dot to create small holes in the can underneath. When finished, remove graph paper.

Drill Larger Holes

This part can be a little tedious

Using a 3/32″ masonry drill bit, drill through each of the small pilot holes made by the nails. This will clean up the holes and create a consistent, polished look. Feel free to play around with other drill bit sizes to create different looks.

Paint

Aren’t they beautiful!?

Stuff the inside of the can with paper towels or an old rag. Holding the can at least six inches away, lightly coat with outdoor spray paint. Layer three or four thin coats until the metal is no longer visible. Remove rag when dry.

Optional: Add a Handle

Drill a hole on each side of the can and add an old wire clothes hanger or piece of rope for carrying or hanging.

I found this recipe on Pinterest and fell in love! We have made these now, 3 different times! This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever. No funny ingredients, no chilling time, etc. Just a simple, straightforward, amazingly delicious, doughy yet still fully cooked, chocolate chip cookie that turns out perfectly every single time!

Cook Time: 8 minutes 

Total Time: 30 minutes

Servings 36 cookies Calories: 183 kcal 

Equipment

  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cups
  • KitchenAid Mixer
  • spatula
  • baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter* softened
  • 1 cup white (granulated) sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt***
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (or chunks, or chopped chocolate)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl mix flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder. Set aside.
  • Cream together butter and sugars until combined.
  • Beat in eggs and vanilla until fluffy.
  • Mix in the dry ingredients until combined.
  • Add 12 oz package of chocolate chips and mix well.
  • Roll 2-3 TBS (depending on how large you like your cookies) of dough at a time into balls and place them evenly spaced on your prepared cookie sheets. (alternately, use a small cookie scoop to make your cookies)!
  • Bake in preheated oven for approximately 8-10 minutes. Take them out when they are just BARELY starting to turn brown.
  • Let them sit on the baking pan for 2 minutes before removing to cooling rack.

Notes

  • When you remove the cookies from the oven they will still look doughy. THIS is the secret that makes these cookies so absolutely amazing! Please, I beg you, do NOT overbake!
  • **Butter. I use Kirkland Brand Salted Butter from Costco to make these cookies. I have also used Tillamook salted butter with equally excellent results. Unsalted butter would also be great! I just recommend tasting the dough to ensure that it’s salted to your liking!
  • ***Some people have said they think the cookies are too salty. Please be sure to use natural Sea Salt (not iodized table salt). If you are concerned about saltiness start with 1/2 tsp salt and adjust to your tastes. I always make it with salted butter and 1 tsp sea salt.

1. Discard what doesn’t bring you joy.

Simply putting things away makes us think that our clutter problem has been solved. However sooner or later the clutter begins to pile up and we are eventually left with even less space and more frustration.

That’s why the first step to maintaining a clean and organized home starts with discarding things that we don’t really want or need.

To make the discarding process easier, Kondo suggests taking each item and asking yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If it does keep it if it doesn’t throw it away. 

 

2. Tidy by category instead of by room. 

When you begin your discarding process, Kondo recommends thinking of your clutter in terms of categories instead of by room.

For example, the category you would like to declutter first would be “clothes”. So you would gather all of the clothes in your house and place them in one spot. You will take each individual garment and ask, “Does this spark joy?” and thus begin the separation of things you will keep or toss.

By doing this, it allows you to quietly dispose of junk without disrupting your family as well as simplifies the process of tidying up.

 

3. Fold items vertically. 

Fold your clothes vertically in your dresser to save space and prevent clutter.

According to Kondo, you should always try your best to fold what you can hang. In other words, instead of hanging sweaters and shirts, it’s better to fold and place them in your clothing drawer.

Similar to how the spines of books are displayed, she also recommends folding items vertically and placing them side by side instead of stacking on top of each other.

This makes it easier to view and select clothes without making a mess.

4. Show deep appreciation for your belongings. 

For the Japanese, many share a cultural belief that items in the home have a soul.

With this in mind, Kondo suggests “thanking” items for their hard work and service before discarding them. This provides one with a deeper appreciation and a little closure before tossing items you no longer need.

 

5. Dedicate a whole day to cleaning. 

When deciding to declutter your home, you want to set up a single day for the entire process. Deciding to split your cleaning into separate days may cause your cleaning efforts to be ineffective and go on longer than required.

 

6. Shoeboxes are the best organizers.

Shoeboxes are an item that’s found readily available in anyone’s home. Kondo believes that these are the perfect organizers and should be repurposed as such.

7. Live in the present. 

When you begin to discard items, do not get attached to the memories. “Cherish who you are are now,” says Kondo. In the end, you want to want to keep things that you love and get rid of things that you have “just because”. The purpose of decluttering this way is that in the end you are only surrounded by things that “spark joy” and truly makes you happy.

Often times people tell me that they can’t tidy up every day, they’re too busy, it’s too much, etc.  Marie Kondo has a lot of amazing tips for us to use on a daily basis, she’s helped many people worldwide learn how to tackle their unorganized homes. 

My mother raised us with nearly this exact list.  She is very OCD about keeping things tidy, in order and simply kept up with.  She hates a mess.

Task 1: Make your bed

While making your bed each day might sound like a tedious task, you’ll be surprised at how tidy your room will look with a made bed. As soon as you get out of bed in the morning, take the time to make your bed.

 

Task 2: Do a morning tidy

Marie Kondo believes that one of the secrets to a tidy home is tidying first thing in the morning. By doing a quick tidy in the morning, you are starting your day off on the right foot! Choose a trouble spot in your home, and start by tidying this area first thing in the morning.

 

Task 3: Let in some fresh air

Our homes can sometimes feel stuffy, especially in the winter months when we are spending more time indoors. Open up the windows for a few minutes to let in a fresh breeze.

 

Task 4: Put things back where they belong when you’re done using them

As our days go on, we may find ourselves bringing out pots, pans, clothes, and other belongings to use. As soon as you’re done using these items, remember to put them back where they belong.

 

Task 5: Fold your clothes

Marie Kondo believes that the best way to store clothes is by using her folding method. This method takes a little bit of extra time but has a great payoff! If you are doing a load of laundry today, take the time to fold your clothes.

 

Task 6: Make sure everything in your home has a home

If you are finding that items in your home are constantly out of place, this might be because these items don’t really have a home. Take time to find a home for these items. If you find that something you’ve stored doesn’t work well for you, take the time to change it.

 

Task 7: Tidy in the evening

Before you go to bed or prepare for bed each night Marie Kondo suggests making one last tidying effort for the day. This might be as simple as making sure the toys are put away or tidying up your counters from dinner. Take this time to clean up your home so that you can have a fresh start in the morning.

Most of us are surrounded by clutter. We didn’t intend to be surrounded by clutter. It just sort of happened. I also think it’s fair to say that when we were little, none of us thought, “I want to grow up to have a messy, disorganized house!” Yet here we are. Our wildest dreams have not come true.

There are myriad reasons most of us struggle with keeping our homes clean and organized. Here are four you may not have thought of. (See if these pitfalls have happened to you and learn how to avoid them!

  1. Not dealing with paper as soon as it comes into the house.

Papers, oh the number of papers we get nearly on a daily basis, from schools, the mail, work.  It’s like a government conspiracy to fill our homes with paper! Maybe they are secretly subsidizing the lumber industry and encouraging the proliferation of paper. Whatever the cause, it has to go and it has to go AS SOON as we bring it inside.

I go through my children’s backpacks every day we choose papers that we’d like to hang up (A+ Spelling and Math tests and things of that sort, the rest gets put in the recycling bin, with the mail just walk straight to the recycle bin before you even set a single piece of mail down. Go through the mail and throw all the ads, coupons, and other items you don’t need or want in the bin. (There is no need to keep all those coupons you get, no matter how enticing they might seem. If you are an avowed extreme couponer and have a system for keeping all your coupons under control, then you can keep them. Otherwise, put them in the recycle bin immediately. You can always grab them out again if you REALLY need new windows or a $1.00 taco).

Then all the other papers that need attention (bills, payments, etc.), put them all in ONE place (preferably a plastic see-through folder). This way you will be reminded of what you need to do, and you won’t have to go searching for these important papers, nor will they clutter up your desk or counter.

2. Only throwing out what you don’t like.

Sounds counter-intuitive, right? After all, we should throw out things we don’t like. But what about all the things we sort of like? What about all the things we don’t care about? Consider that a great deal of your clutter consists of these things that would fall into the “maybe” pile if you were to sit down and go through all of them. Instead, we should focus on what we do like, and what we like a lot. In fact, we should only keep the things we love. Can you see how drastically this would cut down on your clutter? Imagine how amazing it would be to only have things that you loved! The next time you declutter, take everything into your hands and see how you feel about it. If you love it, keep it. If not, get rid of it. Somebody else will like it better than you.

3. Thinking too much.

“I used to love this!”

“After I lose a little weight I’ll wear this.”

“What if I need it for the zombie apocalypse?”

A huge part of our clutter problem stems from our emotional attachment to things, feelings of guilt, and our unrealistic, almost desperate thoughts of “I might need this later.” Here’s the thing. None of these are good reasons. These stem from a reluctance to let go of the past, or a fear of the future. We don’t want to be stuck in the past, nor do we want to be scared of what might happen tomorrow. If we were to give anybody advice for their lives in general, we would tell them to let go of their past and to enjoy today! The same thing applies to your “things.” Only keep what you love NOW, and don’t be held hostage by the secret messages from all your stuff.

“If you get rid of me, you’ll regret it! I know I’m just an ugly orange t-shirt with your high school logo, but if you throw me out, you will lose all your memories from high school!”

“I’m the best hand-knitted wool socks you’ve ever had! Even though you never wear me, your mother-in-law made them for you, and she will know if you get rid of me. SHE WILL KNOW!” 

Tell your clutter to be hush, then get rid of it. (Believe me, it will be fine and so will you)

4. Trying to declutter and organize at the same time.

Have you ever tried to dig a hole in the ground while someone else was filling the hole with dirt?

This is what it’s like when we pair decluttering with organizing at the same time. We pull an item or two off our shelves, then rearrange the rest of the junk we have decided to keep (or that we sort of like or that we don’t care about). You need to pull ALL of the items off the shelf, decide what you love, and discard or donate the rest. Only when that shelf is empty and you are left with what you truly love should you put things back on the shelf. Likewise with clothes. Don’t pull out one pair of pants, decide you like it, fold it and put it back in the drawer, then pull out another pair and do the same. You’ve got to thoroughly declutter and have an empty space staring back at you so that you will know how to fill it.
